Gordon Saxe, MD PhD MPH, is the Director of Research, a Preventive and Integrative Medicine physician, and a founding member at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) Center for Integrative Medicine. He is also the Medical Director of the UCSD Program in Integrative Nutrition and Natural Medicine, the co-developer of the UCSD Natural Healing and Cooking Program, and the Director of UCSD’s Krupp Endowed Fund for Integrative Medicine Research.
Dr. Saxe is a nationally recognized expert on nutrition and cancer and is most well known for his pioneering work in the use of a whole food, plant-based diet combined with mind-body stress reduction to control the progression of advanced prostate cancer. His past research, supported by funding from the National Institutes of Health, the American Cancer Society and The Cancer Project, has focused on such areas as: the epidemiology of diet and survival in cancers of the prostate, breast, and pancreas; the relationships among diet and estrogen receptor status and other tumor characteristics in breast cancer; diet and gene expression in prostate cancer; and physician-patient communication and attitudes regarding Complementary and Alternative Medicine. His diverse clinical background includes training in Preventive Oncology and Cardiology; nutritional healing; functional foods, herbs, and other non-drug medicines; mind-body disciplines such as yoga, t’ai chi, and Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction; and eastern and western healing systems including Chinese and Ayurvedic Medicine, Macrobiotics and Natural Hygiene.
Prior to his work at UCSD, Dr. Saxe served as Medical Director for the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine. He received his MD at Michigan State University, his PhD in Epidemiology at the University of Michigan, and his MPH in Nutrition at Tulane University. He completed residency training at the University of Massachusetts, is Board certified in Preventive Medicine, and is a Member of the Moores UCSD Cancer Center and a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition.
